I chose these magazine publishers in particular as they did social and music magazines. One in particular is Bauer Magazine who do print three types of music magazine. These will help me approach my work with a new look. These publishers have been going for a while and have sold a large amount of their brands.

Preliminary Task

In the preliminary we where told to make a cover and contents page for a school magazine. I did this using Microsoft Publisher and the tools it had to offer.

Cover Page

Here I chose a photo from a previous photo shoot in which we went around the school with a digital camera. The images unfortunately came out rather fuzzy as you can see above. To improve this cover I would use a clearer image and a better bubble that would fit with the theme. My magazine fit it's purpose as it was meant to be a college magazine which I followed even with slight implications and mistakes.

Contents Page
Unfortunately the image for this page as well came out fuzzy and I made a few spelling mistakes that I did not check over before printing. I can improve this by selecting more clearer images and checking my spelling/grammar before finishing.

Practice Magazine Cover

I first opened Adobe Photoshop CS6 the clicked File, open and then selected my already existing image. I then duplicated the background image (the existing image that I uploaded) by righ clicking and selecting duplicate layer, I the clicked ok on the box that popped up giving my a duplicate layer. On the copy layer of he background I clicked on he magic wand tool, selected background and deleted it. I then proceeded to fill in he background by going on the colour pallet to pick the colour I wish to use then selected the bucket tool and filled in the background with my desired colour. To put a masthead in I clicked on the type tool then selected a certain spot on my image. Filling in my desired text I then placed the layer just below my background layer so that the mast head would go behind the image. i hen clicked n h typing tool again to d my sell-line. Lastly I inserted another image, the barcode, by copying he layer then pasting it in wit my other layers. To resize it to fit I clicked edit then free transform to resize my image. i held down the shift key s my image would not go out of proportion. To finish i save my file as a JPEG so hat I can use the image to put on my blog.

Preliminary Task Flat Plans

Here I have made preliminary flat plans to show what I would like my cover and contents to look like. This is a simple plan that is made to show the basic layout.

Front Cover:

On my front cover of my magazine I have placed my masthead in the top left corner and made my image cover the entire magazine. Subheadings are just below the masthead with a bubble at the bottom to promote anything important within the magazine. A main coverline goes across the image to show that it is the main story/ focus of the magazine.

Contents:

In my content I have placed the masthead from the cover in the left hand corner again and also placed another masthead to say contents. I have placed in a section to show images of main stories and placed contents sections underneath the logo and just on the bottom for any minor stories.

Key Features of a Magazine Cover

I found this photo when I went on Google and searched "Rolling Stones cover". I then proceeded to edit it by labelling the key features of magazines.

Masthead: Is the logo of the magazine.
Main Cover line: Massive heading that is normally no more then five words. This gives a short and snappy snip-it of what the article inside is about.
Subheading: Explains somewhat of the story, like a teaser.
Essential Info: This is the date, issue number, price and i the magazine has a website.
Cover line: This shows on the cover what the magazine contains for the reader.

Print Brief

You must complete two linked tasks. The set brief is as follows:

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group must produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style).

All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate(s), minimum of four images per candidate.

Why is there a preliminary task and a main task?

The preliminary task is designed as your chance to familiarise yourself with the software and hardware, to working in a team (if applicable) and to organising your planning and construction. Think of it as a ‘trial run’ for your main task.

The preliminary task is unpressurised, because it is not formally marked
for your coursework. It does not have to be of a highly ‘finished’ or polished quality.
However, it must be undertaken. Failure to undertake or complete the preliminary task will result in a 15 mark deduction from your main task construction mark.

You must complete it by the deadline set by your teacher. Save your work so that you can submit it with your main task on the Easter deadline.

) There should be evidence of your skills progression between the preliminary task and the main task. This will inform the mark given to you for your main task.

) Remember that coursework is worth 50% of AS Level Media Studies, which makes it hugely important. It is unlikely that coursework for your other AS levels will count for such a high percentage of the overall mark.
